It's amazing how fast the weeks are flying by in health class! It will be summer break before we know it. Students continue to be hard and work, we have had some excellent class discussions recently. Next week will be no different :) The sixth graders are continuing the fitness unit. We will discuss injury prevention and creating fitness plans. The unit will wrap up with a chapter test next Friday. The seventh grade students will continue the unit on Alcohol awareness. We have had some outstanding discussions. Students are learning a ton. The unit will wrap up with a unit test and folder check towards the end of the week. The eighth graders will begin the sexuality education unit on Monday. I promise that the kids will learn a lot and no one will die of embarassment! We will be discussing female and male reproductive systems next week. Have a great weekend!

Next week will be yet another busy one in health class! The sixth graders have wrapped up the Mental and Emotional health unit. Next week they will begin the fitness unit. They will be learning about the importance of exercise for an overall healthy lifestyle. The seventh graders have their tobacco unit test on Monday. With the tobacco unit ending, next up is learning about alcohol. Students will learn what alcohol does to the body- both short and long term. They will also learn ways to resist peer pressure. The eighth graders took their nutrition unit test this week. We have started a unit on death and dying. Next week as part of the curriculum, they will be watching the movie Tuesdays with Morrie. If any parents have not seen the movie, I would highly recommend it! It is a great discussion starter on the topic of death and grief.

Lifeskills 4/9-4/13

Next week we are lucky to have Mrs. Adelman from the Township of Downers Grove presenting the Lifeskills program. The Lifeskills program is taught at all of the surrounding junior highs. It is a GREAT opportunity for students to learn skills for use in their every day lives.

The sixth grade program focuses on bullying. Students will learn what to do in situations where they are victims of bullying. They will also learn how to help friends and how to make sure they are not being bullies themselves.

The seventh grade program focuses on drug education. The presentation goes along wonderfully with the Lakeview drug education curriculum. The students will discuss what certain drugs do to the body. The focus will be on refusal skills and how to "Say NO."

The eighth grade program focuses on stress management and goal setting. Students will learn ways to relieve stress and how to prevent it from happening. They will also practice goal setting with an emphasis on preparing for high school.

The students should have a wonderful week! Please ask your child about the program and what they are learning :)
